Rule clarification: If a player's 5 yards from the free hit is it obstruction?

player is getting ready to hit free hit. other player on same team is 5 yards away waiting if pass is needed it. defender is right behind her. is tha obstruction?

Hi Ed,

No, the defender is not in playing distance or can try to play the ball it is a free hit.

It can become obstuction.

the player that is take the free hit is using the self pass and dribbles forward towards the defender and his team mate.

If the team mate stay's where he is and give the defender space to run around him it is not obstuction, but as soon as the team mate of the ball carrier is moving the same direction of the defender it is obstruction. he is than blocking the defenders

Lets say the free hit taker give the a short pass to his team mate, still no obstuction. it will be obstuction when he passes the ball back to the free hit taker and stays where he is or blocks the defender by staying in front of him.

It is only obstuction when the defender or attacker,

  1. is in playing distance of the ball (5yards is not in playing disctance)
  2. is trying the play the ball (waving with your arm in the air is not trying to play the ball)

I hope this will help

Victor

thanks for the answer to that question. we had coach question whether we could position our girl in front of hers on a free hit. we had different i nterpretaions from different referees.  thanks   ed

If your 5 yard awat player is stationary, then no infringment. However if your player continually moves to place herself in front of the opposition player and block her - then yes your player is causing obstruction. Thing to rememeber is your player in the middle of the field (between each 25 yard area) can be closer than 5 yards, She could be 4 yards away but the opposition have to be 5 yards, this can allow short quick pass back to original hitter for either self play or to pass sqaure to moving player!

cheers ian

Player from same team is entitled to be within 5 yards (as long as it isn't in the attacking 23m area), the opponent isnt so she cant be obstructing. if however after taking a self pass, the ball carrier moves in such a way that the team mate is screening the opponent and denying the oportunity to engage and tackle. then it might be a third party obstruction.

It depends on what happens after the free hit is taken.
